Beautiful typography: Marian Bantjes

Came across this artist via Design Observer. Marian Bantjes is a typographer of the purest sort: hand-lettering skills that you don’t see much of any more. Her grace with form is absolutely amazing and truly inspiring if you are in the realm of type design.

Her latest work is a 16-page monograph series for The Creative Review, that —unfortunately for those who only pick up the pub once in a while— only come with subscriptions. Entitled Love Stories, each piece is a testament to friends and family dear to Bantjes. From pencil to ink to pixels, her art looks so painstakingly meticulous, I can’t imagine someone that in love with either a person or a project as to dedicate so much effort [I often get too bored with a piece and as a result have left a series of abandoned art in my impatient wake].

Time consuming efforts aside, her talent with letter forms is quite lovely and I can stare at these pieces for a quite a while, following each swashed flourish to its perfect end. As one commenter on her site states:

You are doing just what the medieval monks did when they illuminated those manuscript letters with their immense attention to detail and passion, almost visibly grasping for communication with a higher being/a higher state of being, however one wants to express it

Inspired by “everything” from garbage to art [is there always a difference?], this Saskatchewan native says she has more ideas than she will ever be able to produce in her lifetime. Judging by the amount of time she puts into each piece, I don’t doubt it.
